Talk at Rotary Club of Brighton and Hove Breakfast

From the Rotary Club of Brighton and Hove Breakfast newsletter - May 2012

Heather and SueWe were joined by Heather Rayment from Brighton based charity Target Tuberculosis at our evening meeting on the 24th of April. Heather spoke passionately about the work of the charity in Africa and Asia – highlighting the scale of The Tuberculosis problem in the developing world. We were shocked to learn that 1.5 million people this year will die as a result of TB, and heard moving stories about some of the people their work helps.

We heard about Missy, a part time security guard who lives in a slum in Uganda, when he fell ill with TB he was no longer able to look after his family, his wife left him and his three small children were taken into care, life was desperate. But thanks to Target TB Missy is now getting the treatment and support he needs from one of their volunteers. His volunteer visits him every other day to make sure he is taking his medication correctly and has even delivered food parcels to him. Missy will be on treatment for 8 months, but thanks to the support of his Target TB volunteer he is now much better.  It costs just £32 for Target TB to train a volunteer, and last year they trained over 7,000 across Africa and India. We were delighted to donate £40 towards their work and know that this will make a difference.

Picture shows Heather doing her special ‘thank you for your donation’ dance with club president Susan Harrison. To find out more about arranging a talk for your club you can e-mail Heather on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Legacy Giving just got even better

Changes in Inheritance Tax

Inheritance tax changes came into play on Friday April 6th. Under the new incentive, the Government have introduced a lower Inheritance Tax rate of 36% for taxpayers leaving 10% or more of their estate to charity - after the deduction of the ‘nil rate band’

Why leave a gift in your Will?

When it comes to your Will, it's only right that your family and friends come first. But that doesn't mean you can't also leave a gift to a cause close to your heart.  No matter how large or small, leaving a gift to Target Tuberculosis in your Will really makes a difference and will help more vulnerable people living with TB for years to come.

To see how these changes will affect you and to estimate the value of your estate and calculate your charitable gift you can use the online gift calculator from Remember A Charity.

Here is a simple example of how this initiative could financially benefit you from Renaissance Legal.

Fred has a net estate worth £825,000. The first £325,000 of the estate is covered by the Inheritance Tax ‘nil rate band’ and the remaining £500,000 is liable to Inheritance Tax at the rate of 40%. Therefore, if Fred leaves his whole estate to his children, the Inheritance Tax bill will be £200,000.

However, if Fred were to utilise the new tax discount, leaving 10% of his net estate to charity, the result would be a £50,000 gift to charity and the remaining £450,000 taxed at the reduced rate of 36%. Therefore, his final Inheritance Tax bill will be £162,000 and importantly the overall reduction of the children’s inheritance would be only £12,000.

Legacies are vital to our very survival, to raise some much needed awareness, we’ve joined forces with Remember A Charity, the largest consortium of its kind in the UK working to promote legacy giving.

Target TB launches two major new projects on World TB Day

On World TB Day, 24th March 2012, Target TB is announcing and celebrating the launch of two major new TB projects, supported by two of the UK’s biggest charitable funders, the Big Lottery Fund and Comic Relief.

Target TB is linking the fight against TB, one of the world’s biggest killer diseases, with other key issues affecting people living in poverty in Africa and Asia. TB isn’t a disease of the past. It kills 1.4 million people each year, even though TB is curable. 98% of those deaths are in the developing world.

In Balaka, a poor rural district in Malawi with few health services, Target TB will screen women and children for TB during routine antenatal and under five clinics. Trained staff will link anyone found with TB to free treatment and support. If untreated, TB in pregnant women can lead to neonatal mortality, lower birth weights, prematurity and complications. Parents unaware that they have TB can also infect their young children through close contact.

In East and West Singhbhum districts of Jharkhand, India, Target TB will drive a 4x4 mobile health-clinic into the heart of 192 remote tribal villages. As well as testing and treating for TB, health-workers will also test for malaria, fighting two major diseases with shared resources. Tribal people are amongst the poorest of the poor in Indian society. They are isolated in hard to reach regions and largely misunderstood due to traditional beliefs and customs.

Nikki Jeffery, Director at Target TB says ‘these new projects are a huge boost to Target TB’s work. We can reach out to some of the world’s most vulnerable people, women, children, and indigenous groups, with life-saving TB information, treatment and care & support. I’m delighted that Target TB has been given this opportunity by both The Big Lottery Fund and Comic Relief’.

Children in India join the call to "Stop TB"

Every day in India 1,000 people lose their lives to TB.  This year we are working hard to improve people’s knowledge of TB and to mark world TB Day we have been on the road visiting schools and running special classes to teach more children about TB.

This campaign has got off to a great start, on the first day alone the team visited 4 schools where over 400 children learnt life saving facts about TB.

Pictured left, students at the Shri Shivram Junior High School join the call to stop TB, saying

"I want to stop TB in my lifetime"
